Our History

Prior to 1989, Dan Lawson, working in a VW shop, dreamed of a service center that would be an original.  A shop that others would seek to imitate because of its excellence, level of customer satisfaction, the diversity of products and services it would offer to VW enthusiasts, including not only minor and major service, but full rebuilding and restoration capabilities.  After looking around a while, he found a suitable location at 2560 South Industrial Parkway in Tempe, Arizona, and on April 1, 1989 he opened up Competition Engineering.  We have been in the same 11,000 square foot property ever since.  Click on the images below to see Dan Lawson and his family and the shop in the "early days."

Our 11 thousand square foot facility is home to a new and used parts and sales area, machine shop, engine room, and work area.  All work is kept in-house.  This means you get better service and a better product.  If you have any comments or questions feel free to call or email us anytime.  For more information about our current service offerings, please click on the "service" link on our menu above. We certainly intend to continue to get better and better.  Our experience and ability to manufacture the highest quality heads, fuel injections systems will continue to increase, month by month.  We will continue to expand our capability to manufacture turbo systems, breather systems and other racing products.  We will also continue to do high-end restorations of VW's and 356 Porsches.  In short, we will continue to be "The place to go to get things done right!".
